Yesterday’s Spy
Steve Champion built a heroic reputation leading an anti-Nazi resistance network during the Second World War. Years later he has become a wealthy and elusive businessman, and an old acquaintance is drawn back into his orbit as rumours suggest that Champion’s wartime connections never really disappeared. Past loyalties, missing information and present-day intelligence interests begin to overlap.
The novel contrasts the romance of resistance with the compromises that follow victory. Deighton asks what happens when a man whose identity was forged in clandestine war continues to live by secrecy, and whether former allies can ever know where wartime necessity ended and personal ambition began.
