SPECTRE hijacks a NATO aircraft carrying two atomic bombs and threatens to destroy major Western cities unless an enormous ransom is paid. The theft triggers an emergency intelligence search, and Bond is sent to the Bahamas after evidence suggests that the aircraft and weapons may have been concealed beneath the sea. There he focuses on Emilio Largo and encounters Domino Vitali, whose personal connection to the plot gives Bond a route into SPECTRE’s operation.
The mission culminates in an underwater struggle to recover the weapons before the deadline expires. Thunderball introduces Ernst Stavro Blofeld as SPECTRE’s leader and turns early-1960s fears of nuclear proliferation, alliance security and international terrorism into a fictional blackmail crisis. Its politics are invented, but its anxiety about portable nuclear weapons belongs directly to the Cold War arms race.
