This collection places Bond in five shorter missions and encounters. “From a View to a Kill” begins with the murder of a military dispatch rider near Paris; “For Your Eyes Only” turns a killing in Jamaica into a private mission of vengeance; and “Risico” sends Bond into a Mediterranean struggle over narcotics smuggling. Each story reduces the scale of the usual Bond adventure while keeping the risks of intelligence work close and personal.
The remaining stories broaden the portrait of 007. “Quantum of Solace” is largely a tale told to Bond about a failed marriage in the Bahamas, while “The Hildebrand Rarity” places him aboard a yacht where cruelty and possible murder matter more than geopolitics. Together they show Fleming using the early Cold War world as a backdrop for espionage, crime, travel and moral ambiguity.
