Royale-les-Eaux, France, in the early Cold War. British Secret Service agent James Bond is sent to bankrupt Le Chiffre, a Soviet-linked operative who has gambled away funds belonging to his employers. Bond’s weapon is baccarat: if he can destroy Le Chiffre at the tables, the man’s own organisation may finish the job. Treasury officer Vesper Lynd and CIA contact Felix Leiter join an operation in which money, nerve and deception matter as much as firearms.
The mission turns brutal after the casino victory, exposing Bond to torture, betrayal and the human cost of intelligence work. Fleming’s first 007 novel establishes the series’ mixture of espionage procedure, luxury travel and sudden violence. Its agencies and characters are fictionalised, but the conflict between British intelligence and Soviet-backed networks belongs firmly to the political climate of the early 1950s.
