Phase
Great Depression in Mississippi
1929–1939 CE
Mississippi entered the Great Depression with an economy heavily dependent on cotton, farm tenancy and low-wage agricultural labour. Falling crop prices, debt and restricted access to credit deepened hardship in towns and rural counties, while existing racial inequality shaped who received work, relief and institutional protection.
New Deal programmes brought employment, agricultural intervention and public works, but benefits were uneven and often administered through segregated local systems.
