Aislabie represented Ripon in Parliament and rose through government to become Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1718. He supported the South Sea Company scheme for restructuring the national debt. After the Bubble collapsed, investigation of his conduct led to his resignation and expulsion from the House of Commons.
Aislabie connected the political scandal of the South Sea Bubble with one of the most important surviving landscapes of eighteenth-century Britain. John Aislabie was born in York, England and died in Studley Royal, Yorkshire, England.
