The book of Joshua describes Rahab as living in Jericho when Israelite spies enter the city. She hides them, acknowledges the power of Israel’s God and arranges a sign by which her family will be spared.

Rahab later appears in Jewish and Christian genealogical and interpretive traditions. Her chronology and the conquest setting are disputed, and historical fiction necessarily reconstructs her private life, motives and relationships beyond the scriptural account.
