Naval Battle
Battle of Camperdown
1797 CE
Admiral Adam Duncan intercepted the Dutch fleet off the coast of North Holland in October 1797. The British attacked in separate divisions and broke through the Dutch line in a close and destructive action.
The victory ended an immediate threat to Britain and restored confidence after the fleet mutinies. It also produced opportunities for promotion among officers who distinguished themselves in battle.
Quarterdeck begins from Kydd’s promotion after Camperdown. The battle allows a former pressed sailor to cross the formal boundary between the lower deck and commissioned rank.
