Railroad camps expose Josephine to violence, labour, poverty and people her social world has taught her to overlook. Her attraction to an Irish worker competes with the approved courtship of a polished Washington suitor whose motives are increasingly suspect. The journey becomes a test of judgement and faith as Josephine learns that maturity requires service, courage and a purpose larger than comfort.
