Charlotte Gleason sails from England in 1886 to marry a wealthy New Yorker she has never met, but fear of an arranged future leads her to exchange identities with her maid, Dora. Charlotte expects temporary freedom; instead she encounters the insecurity, exploitation and hard physical work hidden beneath the city’s prosperity. Dora enters a mansion where one mistake could expose the deception and destroy both women.

The exchanged lives force each woman to reconsider privilege, honesty and the kind of love she wants. Charlotte’s experiment ceases to be romantic once survival is at stake, while Dora must decide whether affection founded on a false identity can become truthful. Christian compassion and repentance shape a story in which social position can be borrowed, but character cannot.
