Montana, 1886. Dianne Selby travels with Cole and their children to Kansas to care for his dying father. After the funeral, Cole’s mother insists that he remain and take responsibility for his inheritance, but hostility inside the household drives Dianne to return to Montana with the children rather than remain under her mother-in-law’s authority.

Back at the ranch, severe winter weather isolates the family and places an increasingly pregnant Dianne under physical and emotional pressure. Cole is torn between obligations to his birth family and the home he has built in Montana. The novel follows their attempt to preserve their marriage through bereavement, distance and frontier hardship, with Dianne’s Christian faith providing the central source of endurance when family security can no longer be taken for granted.
