Once Upon a Crime is the second companion collection to the Murder Most Unladylike novels, bringing together six shorter cases narrated by different members of the detectives’ wider circle. The stories include a mystery aboard the ship carrying Daisy and Hazel home from Hong Kong, a threat to Uncle Felix and Aunt Lucy’s wedding, an investigation by the Junior Pinkertons at Weston School and May Wong’s first attempt to solve a dangerous case in London.
Because the collection moves between countries, families and detective partnerships, it shows the world created by the main novels continuing beyond Daisy and Hazel’s nine murder cases. Familiar characters take control of the casebook, and younger investigators begin to develop methods of their own. The stories bridge the original series and the later Ministry of Unladylike Activity without functioning as a numbered tenth novel.
