Aixa

Aixa, also known as Aisha al-Hurra, was a Nasrid royal woman, wife of Abu al-Hasan Ali and mother of Muhammad XII of Granada. She retained a political following within the court and became a central participant in the dynastic opposition to her husband, particularly after his relationship with the converted Christian Isabel de Solís altered the balance of the royal household.

Aixa supported the movement that proclaimed her son sultan in 1482 and remained involved in negotiation and resistance during the final Granada War. Later legend credits her with the rebuke delivered to Boabdil after the surrender of Granada, but the famous wording is not contemporary. Her career nevertheless demonstrates the political influence exercised by Nasrid royal women through family alliances, property and factional patronage.
