Muhammad XIII of Granada

Muhammad XIII of Granada, usually known as al-Zagal, was the brother of Abu al-Hasan Ali and one of the last Nasrid rulers. An experienced military leader, he supported his brother against Muhammad XII and succeeded to authority over part of the divided emirate. His resistance continued while Castilian-Aragonese forces captured key towns and tightened their control around Granada.

Al-Zagal eventually surrendered his remaining territories and left Iberia for North Africa. Later narratives often contrast his reputation for personal courage with Boabdil’s diplomacy and final capitulation, but both men governed under rapidly deteriorating military and political conditions. Their rivalry allowed the Catholic Monarchs to negotiate and fight against competing Nasrid claimants.
