Abu al-Hasan Ali, Sultan of Granada

Abu al-Hasan Ali, known in Spanish tradition as Muley Hacén, was a Nasrid sultan of Granada during the opening years of the final war with Castile and Aragon. His seizure of Zahara in 1481 helped intensify the conflict. At the same time, factional struggles within the Nasrid court weakened the emirate, particularly the rivalry involving his wife Aixa, their son Muhammad XII and his brother Muhammad al-Zagal.

After Muhammad XII was proclaimed sultan in Granada, Abu al-Hasan continued to command support elsewhere and briefly recovered authority before illness and political division forced him aside. His reign illustrates that the fall of Granada was not simply the result of external conquest: dynastic competition and contested legitimacy fragmented the state while Ferdinand and Isabella pursued a sustained military campaign.
