Edith Stuyvesant Vanderbilt

Edith Stuyvesant Dresser married George Washington Vanderbilt in 1898 and became mistress of Biltmore. She supported schools, literacy and vocational programmes for estate workers and nearby communities, and their daughter Cornelia was born at Biltmore in 1900.

After George’s death in 1914, Edith assumed greater responsibility for the estate, supported wartime Red Cross work and helped secure the land that became Pisgah National Forest. Financial pressure and the 1916 flood contributed to her sale of Biltmore Estate Industries to Fred Seely in 1917. These Tangled Threads places this real transition behind its fictional community of weavers.
