Leigh Ann Conners lives in Roswell, Georgia, where textile mills tie civilian labour to the Confederate war effort. Her family’s loyalties are complicated, and the arrival of Union troops brings the destruction of the mills and the arrest of women workers accused of supporting the rebellion.
Through Leigh Ann’s experience of separation and forced movement, the novel recovers a little-known episode of the Atlanta Campaign. It shows that industrial workers and children could be treated as military problems and that survival did not fit neatly into patriotic accounts written by either side.
