Fifteen-year-old Rose Frampton leaves South Carolina in 1900 to marry Rene Dumarest, a wealthy older man, and begin life in Brooklyn. The move exchanges familiar Southern customs for an urban household, new social expectations and a marriage whose emotional balance she does not yet understand.

Written in diary form and inspired by Rinaldi’s family history, the novel follows Rose as she develops practical independence without romanticising the restrictions placed on a young wife.
