Their investigation moves through classrooms, dormitories, staff rooms and hidden passages as official explanations repeatedly fail to account for what Hazel saw.
The novel establishes the series through Hazel’s precise casebook voice and Daisy’s confidence, social authority and appetite for risk. Deepdean’s prefects, teachers and school rituals create a closed world in which adults underestimate girls and institutional reputation matters more than uncomfortable evidence. The mystery is therefore also a study of friendship, outsider status and the unequal power to decide whose testimony is believed.
