Colonial Encounter in Igboland

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Christian missions, palm-produce commerce and British political expansion reached the decentralised Igbo communities of southeastern Nigeria. Conversion and mission education created new opportunities while dividing families and villages.

British authority was established unevenly through treaties, military expeditions, district administration and courts whose officials often misunderstood local law and political organisation. The absence of centralised kingship made imported models of chiefly rule especially disruptive.

This is the most specific context for Things Fall Apart, which places the arrival of missionaries and colonial government within the life of an Igbo community rather than treating colonisation only as an external imperial event.
