Wolfe Tone
1763–1798
Wolfe Tone was an Irish republican and a founder of the Society of United Irishmen.
Tone sought to unite Irish Protestants, Catholics and Dissenters in a movement for representative government and independence. He negotiated with revolutionary France for military support and was captured after the failed French expedition of 1798. Thomas Pakenham’s histories place this figure within the political and military events covered by the relevant book.
