Henry Morton Stanley

Henry Morton Stanley was a journalist and explorer whose expeditions became closely connected with European expansion in central Africa.
After crossing central Africa and tracing the Congo River, Stanley worked for Leopold II to establish stations and treaties that underpinned the Congo Free State. His later Emin Pasha Relief Expedition also became a major episode in the imperial partition. Thomas Pakenham’s histories place this figure within the political and military events covered by the relevant book.
