Great Trek and Voortrekker Republics, 1835–1854

The Great Trek was the movement of thousands of Dutch-speaking settlers from the Cape Colony into the southern African interior during the 1830s and 1840s. Trek parties crossed difficult terrain, negotiated or fought with African polities and attempted to establish communities outside British colonial authority.

The migration intersected with the aftermath of the Mfecane, the expansion of the Zulu kingdom and conflicts involving Ndebele, Sotho-Tswana and other societies. Leadership, land agreements, commando warfare and the creation of short-lived republics shaped the period.

Haggard’s Swallow and the opening movement of the Zulu Trilogy use the Great Trek as a frontier setting in which family loyalties, settler ambitions and African political power collide.
