Zhang Zuolin was the Manchurian warlord who led the Fengtian clique and became the most powerful military ruler in northern China during the 1920s.
From his base in Manchuria, Zhang competed for control of Beijing and repeatedly intervened in the politics of the Beiyang government. Japanese officers assassinated him by bombing his train near Mukden in the Huanggutun Incident of 1928, hoping to strengthen Japanese influence in the region. Adam Williams’s The Emperor’s Bones places this figure within the political conflicts of 1920s China.
