East Asian Economic Transformation

1945–1990 CE

After 1945 Japan rebuilt as an industrial power, followed by rapid growth in South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. State planning, international trade, education, foreign investment and access to Western markets helped create sharply different but interconnected development models.

China’s economic reforms after 1978 added a continental dimension to this transformation, while Southeast Asian states combined industrial expansion with political authoritarianism, inequality and the legacies of war and decolonisation. The region’s growth changed migration, urban life and relations with the United States and Europe.

Pacific Destiny surveys this transformation near the end of the Cold War.
