Songgotu

Songgotu was a senior Qing statesman and diplomat during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor. He served in high office and took part in the negotiations that produced the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689. The Deer and the Cauldron makes him one of Trinket’s court associates.

Songgotu’s prominence at court reflected both his own administrative career and his family’s powerful position within the Qing elite. His role in the Treaty of Nerchinsk helped establish a negotiated frontier with Russia, but later factional struggles over the imperial succession weakened him. Kangxi eventually removed him from office, and Songgotu died in confinement after being accused of political misconduct.

Jin Yong’s The Deer & the Cauldron: Book 1 introduces Songgotu within the Kangxi court, where Wei Xiaobao’s accidental rise brings him into contact with powerful Manchu officials during the struggle against Oboi. In The Deer & the Cauldron: Book 2, Songgotu remains part of the imperial political network through which Trinket survives conflicting obligations to Kangxi and the anti-Qing secret societies. The Deer and the Cauldron: Book 3 moves into the later problems of the Three Feudatories, Taiwan and the Russian frontier; Songgotu’s historical importance is especially relevant to this diplomatic world because he was one of the senior Qing negotiators associated with the Treaty of Nerchinsk. The trilogy therefore uses him as a recognisable court statesman inside its comic mixture of real Qing politics and fictional intrigue.
