Oboi

c. 1610–1669

Oboi was a Manchu military commander and court official who served the early Qing dynasty under the Hong Taiji, Shunzhi and Kangxi emperors. A member of the Gūwalgiya clan and the Bordered Yellow Banner, he gained distinction in campaigns connected with the Qing conquest of China and became known for personal bravery and loyalty to the ruling house. When the Shunzhi Emperor died in 1661, Oboi was appointed one of four regents for the young Kangxi Emperor.

As the other regents died or lost influence, Oboi accumulated exceptional power at court and increasingly dominated government. His struggle with the regent Suksaha culminated in Suksaha’s execution in 1667, deepening concern about Oboi’s authority. In 1669 the teenage Kangxi Emperor organised Oboi’s sudden arrest and stripped his faction of power, marking the beginning of the emperor’s personal rule. Oboi was imprisoned and died later that year; some honours were restored to his family after his death.

Jin Yong’s The Deer & the Cauldron: Book 1 turns the historical regent Oboi into the first major political enemy faced by the young Kangxi Emperor and the opportunistic Wei Xiaobao. Oboi’s dominance at court creates the palace struggle in which Wei’s quick tongue and deception become unexpectedly useful to the emperor. His fall anchors the novel’s comic adventures in a real transfer of power from regency government to Kangxi’s personal rule.
