Yue Zhongqi
1686–1754
Yue Zhongqi was a Qing dynasty general and official who became one of the leading commanders on China’s north-western frontier during the reigns of the Kangxi and Yongzheng emperors.
A descendant of the Song general Yue Fei, he campaigned against Tibetan and Mongol forces and held senior authority in Sichuan and Shaanxi during a period of major Qing territorial consolidation. A senior military commander in north-western China, Yue exposed the 1728 approach urging him to rebel and cooperated with the investigation ordered by the Yongzheng Emperor.
Jonathan D. Spence’s Treason by the Book begins in 1728 when the scholar Zeng Jing attempted to persuade the Qing general Yue Zhongqi to rebel against the Yongzheng Emperor. Yue reported the approach, setting in motion an investigation that traced anti-Manchu arguments through teachers, students, prohibited writings and rumours about the emperor’s accession.
