Barbary Wars, 1801–1815

The Barbary Wars were fought between the United States and North African states whose rulers demanded payments connected to Mediterranean shipping and privateering. The First Barbary War centred on Tripoli from 1801 to 1805, while a second conflict followed in 1815.

The wars tested the new republic’s ability to deploy naval and marine forces overseas. Blockade, coastal attacks, diplomacy and the expedition to Derna became important episodes in early American military history.

The settlements reduced American tribute payments but did not immediately end Mediterranean captivity or European intervention in the region. The conflicts helped establish a lasting tradition of United States overseas naval power.
