Book
Ancient India
Ancient India follows the subcontinent from the cities of the Indus Valley civilisation through the Vedic age and the rise of large kingdoms to the Maurya Empire. It examines political organisation, religion, trade, warfare and social change, including the development of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions. The book places rulers and empires within a wider history of urban life, intellectual exchange and connections across South and Central Asia.
The broad chronology shows how political unification and cultural diversity coexist. Mauryan imperial rule does not erase regional communities, and religious traditions develop through debate, patronage and contact rather than along a single linear path. The survey therefore places famous rulers such as Ashoka within networks of cities, merchants, teachers and local institutions that connected the subcontinent.
