Palmyrene Empire

After Valerian’s capture in 260, Odaenathus of Palmyra rallied forces in the Roman east and campaigned successfully against Shapur I. He accepted Roman titles and nominal loyalty to Gallienus while exercising exceptional military and political authority across the eastern provinces.

After Odaenathus’s death, Zenobia ruled for her son Vaballathus and extended Palmyrene control into Egypt and Asia Minor. The regime eventually broke openly with Rome and was defeated by Aurelian in 272–273.

Lion of the Sun uses the first phase of Palmyra’s rise, when Odaenathus turned imperial collapse into regional power. The context connects Ballista’s fictional career with the real political reorganisation of the Roman east.
