Philip I of Castile

Philip I of Castile, known as Philip the Handsome, was a Habsburg ruler of the Burgundian Netherlands and briefly king of Castile in 1506.

The son of Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, Philip inherited the Burgundian Netherlands and married Juana of Castile in 1496. Their marriage connected the Habsburg and Spanish dynasties. After Isabella I’s death, Philip challenged Ferdinand II for control of Castile and was recognised as king alongside Juana, but his sudden death in 1506 intensified the struggle over government and succession.
