Aquitaine, 1370. Geoffrey Chaucer travels on behalf of John of Gaunt to persuade the powerful lord Henri de Guyac to remain loyal to the English crown. The assignment is complicated by Chaucer’s earlier captivity in Guyac’s castle and his unresolved attachment to Rosamund, the nobleman’s wife.

When Guyac dies during a boar hunt, the mission becomes a murder inquiry conducted inside a household divided by inheritance, allegiance and the continuing Hundred Years’ War. Chaucer must identify who benefits from the death while finding a route through hostile territory before political failure is blamed on the king’s messenger.
