Markham of the Marines

Markham of the Marines follows Irish lieutenant George Markham, a Royal Marine officer burdened by religious prejudice and a reputation for cowardice. Given command of difficult men during the war with Revolutionary France, he must earn their loyalty through fighting ashore and at sea.

The trilogy carries Markham from Toulon to Corsica and into clandestine operations involving royalists, spies and ambitious naval officers. Its central conflict is between formal honour and practical courage, as Markham repeatedly succeeds through the men whom the service treats as expendable.
