Nest ferch Rhys, daughter of the last king of Deheubarth, grows up within the violent settlement imposed on south-west Wales after Norman expansion. Taken into the household of Henry I and later married to Gerald of Windsor, she becomes central to alliances linking Welsh royalty with the new marcher elite.
Her abduction by Owain ap Cadwgan triggers pursuit, political retaliation and renewed conflict between competing Welsh rulers and Norman lords. The novel follows Nest through desire, captivity and dynastic obligation, using her family’s fortunes to show how personal relationships could alter control of castles, territories and succession.
