Book
Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana
Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana examines the two battles fought in Zululand on 22–23 January 1879: the destruction of a British column at Isandlwana and the defence of the mission station at Rorke’s Drift. Beckett reconstructs the military decisions, terrain and combat while also exploring why the smaller defensive action became so dominant in British memory. The book places both engagements within the wider Anglo-Zulu War and its contested imperial legacy.
The pairing of the battles exposes the dangers of judging the Anglo-Zulu War through one heroic episode. Isandlwana reveals failures of reconnaissance, deployment and command, while Rorke’s Drift demonstrates what a small defensive position could achieve under very different conditions. Studied together, they show both Zulu tactical effectiveness and the uneven character of Britain’s opening invasion.
