In late-1970s Fellburn, twenty-one-year-old Jinny Brownlow works as a typist in a large engineering company and performs the thankless practical tasks for a local theatre group. Her routine changes when she becomes temporary secretary to the forceful company head Bob Henderson and receives unexpected attention from actor Hal Campbell.
The two older men offer different forms of recognition and influence, forcing Jinny to reconsider the passive role she has accepted at work and in the theatre. Her choices become a test of independence within an industrial town where employment, affection and social confidence remain closely connected.
