Maggie Gallacher is delighted when the Duke of Moorshire invites her family to an evening at Lea Hall, interpreting the honour as recognition of everything her husband Rod has done for the town. Her children initially share the excitement, but son Sam responds with open hostility and turns the invitation into another accusation against his mother.

The event exposes resentments that have long been contained within the Gallacher household.
