Battle
2 October 1263 CE
Haakon IV of Norway led a major fleet into the Hebrides and the Firth of Clyde in 1263 after Alexander III sought to extend Scottish authority over islands claimed by the Norwegian crown. Storms damaged and dispersed vessels near the Ayrshire coast.
On 2 October, Norwegian troops protecting stranded ships fought Scottish forces near Largs. The engagement was limited and tactically inconclusive, but Haakon withdrew to Orkney, where he died in December. The Treaty of Perth in 1266 transferred the Hebrides and the Isle of Man to Scotland.
On a Sword’s Edge follows the young William Douglas through the campaign and battle, using his first experience of warfare to connect the national contest over the western seaboard with the formation of a future Scottish warlord.
