Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas

Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas, was a powerful Scottish nobleman and soldier known as Archibald the Grim. He consolidated Douglas lands in southern Scotland, defended the border and became one of the dominant magnates of Robert II’s reign.

His authority rested on military experience, territorial expansion and close involvement in royal government. He strengthened the Black Douglas dynasty whose power would shape Scottish politics for much of the fifteenth century.

J. R. Tomlin’s The Douglas Bastard begins Archibald Douglas’s rise from illegitimate exile into the service of William Douglas of Liddesdale during the Second War of Scottish Independence. Trust and Treason follows him after Neville’s Cross as he rebuilds resistance while David II remains an English prisoner. In The Lion of Galloway his growing power must be balanced against loyalty to the king and unrest in the southwest; The Warlord Earl makes him a principal border commander during renewed Anglo-Scottish war, and A Time for War shows an older Archibald confronting another English invasion and the strategic sacrifices required to preserve the kingdom.
