Historical person

Marjorie Bruce

Marjorie Bruce was the daughter of Robert the Bruce and the mother of the future Robert II, first king of the Stewart dynasty. Captured by the English in 1306, she was held for years before being released after Bannockburn.

Her marriage to Walter Stewart united the Bruce and Stewart lines. Although she died before her father, her son’s accession in 1371 made her a crucial dynastic link in Scottish royal history.

Nigel Tranter’s The Price of the King’s Peace places Marjorie Bruce within the dynastic problem that shadows Robert the Bruce’s later reign. The novel follows the king’s effort to turn Bannockburn into an accepted peace while bereavement, ill health and uncertainty over the succession affect the restored royal household. Marjorie’s importance lies in the future beyond Bruce’s own lifetime: through her marriage to Walter Stewart and their son, the Bruce inheritance will pass into the Stewart line.
