John III Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, known as the Red Comyn, was one of the most powerful Scottish nobles during the Wars of Scottish Independence. His family possessed a strong claim to the throne and alternated between resistance to and accommodation with English power.
Robert the Bruce killed Comyn during a confrontation in the church at Dumfries in 1306. The act began a deadly feud and immediately preceded Bruce’s seizure of the Scottish crown.
