Andrew Gray, 7th Lord Gray

Andrew Gray, 7th Lord Gray, was a seventeenth-century Scottish nobleman who inherited the Gray title from his father, Patrick Gray, the politically active Master of Gray. He lived through the reigns of James VI and I, Charles I and the upheavals of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

His position placed him within the networks of court patronage, noble inheritance and confessional politics that shaped Stuart Scotland. He is chiefly significant as a member of a family repeatedly involved in diplomacy, faction and royal service.

Nigel Tranter’s Mail Royal gives Andrew Gray a dangerous interest in the disputed Casket Letters attributed to Mary, Queen of Scots. Gray believes possession of the papers could provide leverage over James VI and I, but they are hidden at the almost inaccessible Fast Castle. He therefore sends his illegitimate nephew David to recover them. The novel makes Andrew’s political calculation the engine of the plot, using the letters as a weapon through which family loyalty, blackmail and the unresolved legacy of Mary’s deposition collide.
