Patrick Gray, 6th Lord Gray

Patrick Gray, 6th Lord Gray, known for much of his life as the Master of Gray, was a Scottish courtier, diplomat and political intriguer. He moved among rival factions during the reigns of Mary, Queen of Scots, and James VI.

Gray took part in negotiations concerning Mary’s fate while privately serving conflicting interests. His career became a byword for opportunism and illustrates the unstable loyalties of late-sixteenth-century Scottish court politics.

In Nigel Tranter’s Lord and Master, Patrick Gray is born into one of Scotland’s great noble families and possesses the charm, intelligence and ambition to move easily through dangerous courts. In Nigel Tranter’s Past Master, Elizabeth I’s long reign is approaching its end, and Patrick, Master of Gray, is determined that James VI of Scotland will inherit the English crown. In Nigel Tranter’s The Courtesan, Mary Gray, the unacknowledged daughter of Patrick, Master of Gray, inherits her father’s beauty, intelligence and instinct for political intrigue.
