Robert II of Scotland

Robert II was king of Scots from 1371 to 1390 and the first monarch of the Stewart dynasty. A grandson of Robert the Bruce through Marjorie Bruce, he had served as guardian of the kingdom during David II’s captivity.

His reign relied heavily on an extensive family network of sons, daughters and regional lordships. In old age, authority increasingly passed to powerful sons, exposing tensions that would continue under Robert III.
