James I was king of Scots from 1406 to 1437, although he spent the first eighteen years of his reign in English captivity. After returning to Scotland, he pursued administrative reform and sought to curb the power of major nobles.
His forceful policies created enemies, and he was assassinated at Perth in 1437 by conspirators with royal connections. James was also a poet traditionally associated with The Kingis Quair.
