Thomas and Charlotte Pitt are drawn to Ashworth Hall, where politicians and representatives from opposing sides of the Irish Home Rule debate have gathered for private negotiations. The discussions are already tense when Ainsley Greville, the government mediator, is found murdered in his bath.

The killing threatens more than the reputation of one household. If the conference collapses into accusation, political hostility may harden into further violence. Pitt must investigate guests whose religious, personal and national loyalties give them reasons to conceal information, while Charlotte uses the social access denied to an official detective. The country-house mystery is therefore inseparable from the constitutional crisis surrounding Ireland in the late nineteenth century.
