Washington, D.C., spring 1934. British intelligence agent and photographer Elena Standish is visiting her grandparents for their sixtieth wedding anniversary when a woman is found dead in the driveway after the family celebration. The car involved belongs to Elena’s grandfather, Wyatt Baylor, who is arrested despite insisting that the death has been arranged to incriminate him.

Elena turns to fellow agent James Allenby and begins examining the victim’s connections, the scientists and diplomats around her, and the enemies her grandfather may have made during an earlier career. The investigation unfolds against a background of mounting international tension as fascist movements gain strength in Europe and political loyalties become harder to read. What begins as an apparently domestic murder therefore draws Elena back into intelligence work and forces her to decide whether the attack on her grandfather is personal or part of a wider attempt to manipulate people with access to sensitive information.
