Paris and Spain, 1925. American journalist Jake Barnes moves through the cafés and night life of the expatriate community while remaining in love with Lady Brett Ashley, whose refusal to accept the limits of their relationship keeps them emotionally bound but unable to build a life together. Their circle includes the insecure writer Robert Cohn, Brett’s bankrupt fiancé Mike Campbell and Jake’s friend Bill Gorton.
