Thomas Keith

Thomas Keith was a Scottish soldier captured in Egypt who entered Muhammad Ali’s service, converted to Islam and rose in the Egyptian army. His career connected the British Alexandria expedition with the Egyptian campaigns in Arabia.

Keith became an officer in Egyptian service after his capture and conversion, eventually joining the campaign against the Wahhabi state in Arabia; he was killed in action in 1815.

Rosemary Sutcliff’s Blood and Sand fictionalises Thomas Keith’s extraordinary change of allegiance after his capture during Britain’s failed 1807 Alexandria expedition.
